Session E: Energizing routines

  • In 1969, the Tennis legend R Krishnan was invited to inaugurate newly created tennis courts at RIT ( then known as REC), Trichy. We were huddled around the courts to watch Krishnan play.
  • Krishnan asked the ball-boy to place a few matchboxes on the other side of the net. He served with such a degree of precision that 'killed' each of the matchboxes!
  • At that moment a 'charge of inspiration' passed through me and inspired me to serve like that someday!
Session E is about cultivating the fight frame of mind to stay inspired under all conditions of victory and defeat! Which is better?
  • To win a challenging goal by a small margin OR
  • to win an easy goal by a wide margin!

What is a 'Play to win' mindset? How to convert the daily routines of engagement into an inspiring experience?

  • Goal with out a practice is a pastime.
  • A pastime without a goal is a dull ritual.

Cultivating the right attitude: Some people settle for small victories while a few more will attempt to win at everything. Only a few may elect to stretch realistically and win the game.

  1. Get goal directed-Knowing why we elect to execute what we have committed to doing. No confusion.
  2. Raise the bar daily- Expect, demand and deliver a little 'DELTA' extra every day.
  3. Inch up everyday- Break down the task into  small steps. Perfect stepping to the next stage in go, one touch, one sweep and one pass; no comeback and rework!
  4. Time and timing: Perfect the rhythm of choosing the right moment and connecting just in time.
  5. Rely only on the self : No one else can do it for me. No excuse and no guilt.
  6. Compete with the best self: No concessions and no handicaps. Our best is yet to come.

Case study: Take on the heat-turn on the charm!

  • Weathering the adversity: Shankar was assigned to a call center to handle customer complaints. Initially, he returned home everyday completely crest fallen at the abuses he had to listened to from angry customers. soon he learned not to take it personally. While initially, he was intimidated by the world of irate customers, he now seemed to have complete control over them.
  • Befriending the unfamiliar: He categorized the emotional profile of the customers and developed a method pf responding to them with empathy. Demonstrating infinite flexibility he elected to be the 'one stop shop' for all their problems. Gradually, he began to notice customers asking for him or recognizing his voice to address him by his first name. Shankar began to enjoy his role and began to enjoy his work even more.He was getting 'Euphoric' when customer called back, just to thank him.
  • Electing to last out: Shankar's dedication to log the various types of problems helped him detect patterns in advance that he alerted his seniors about. He had not merely lasted himself out in his difficult job but turned it into an advantage for himself! His sense of fulfillment was self evident.
